Last weekend, I was having coffee with a colleague and he asked me a very thought-provoking question. His question was, “Are we living by default or by design?” This question was sort of humbling for me. It made me truly examine my lifestyle. The majority of people live by default. This means they simply go with the flow of life and follow societies expectations. In my opinion, this makes people’s lives normal and uneventful in a macro-perspective. NFL Cornerback Richard Sherman once said the phrase, “Mediocre at best”. I think that phrase really describes the lives of people who live by default.
I try to live by design. Every controllable aspect of my life I’ve fine-tuned to make the best lifestyle for me. My lifestyle won’t work for everyone and it’s unique to me. Lifestyles are very much like a musical instrument. When they’re in tune, they sound great, but when they’re out of tune they sound horrible. Just like instruments, lifestyles always need to be checked to see if they’re in tune. When they’re not, we have to make a conscious effort to get them back in tune. Everything I do I try to be the best and become even better at. I intermittently examine my life to see where I’m lagging behind. I’m always building a new good habit. These good habits that are built by design compound on each other. Every successful person has specifically designed their life so that they are successful. Success isn’t sustainable either if you don’t keep adapting. If you want long-term success, you never do truly get to sit back and rest.
If you’re currently living by default, it’s not too late to make a change. Make a promise to yourself right now and keep yourself accountable. Take deep look at your life and find the places you want to make a change. Focus on one change and make it part of your lifestyle. You can’t change your entire life overnight, so you have to focus on one thing at a time. Like I said earlier, these habits compound on themselves. The process of making new good habits is addictive and gets easier as you build momentum. Making the mindset shift is half the battle and it is key to having the best lifestyle balance. In my last post, I mentioned how my greatest goal in life is to reach the absolute pinnacle of my potential. In order to do this, I must keep examining my life and adapting my lifestyle to achieve my potential.
